How my journey began
My studies in Chinese Medicine taught me that our western culture only supports YANG movement. Fitness & wellness is still geared around how you look & anti-aging.
But what about PRO-aging?
I wanted to shift away from youth culture and introduce AGE TRAINING to the fitness industry.
It’s time that people in their 40’s and 50’s be taught which exercises are needed to help with those slow changes that affect brain fog, weight gain & chronic pain.
It’s time that people in their 60’s and 70’s are given the brain-based tools to move so they can avoid injury, falling & muscle loss.
It’s time that we focus on brain health so we can live independently in our 80’s and 90’s so we can enjoy the daily activities that we currently take for granted!
I was in pain at the ripe age of 27. Teaching incredibly high-intensity fitness classes, I felt terrible. I may have looked strong but I was fatigued and often uncomfortable in my movement.
I remember one day, squatting down to pick up some shoes and suddenly I couldn’t get back up. My knees simply said ‘no’.
I sat in that dark little closet, unable to move out of fear that I would truly damage something if I ‘pushed’ through the pain. It was in that painful moment that I made a wonderful decision.
This youth culture of fitness had to change.
At the time I was living in NYC teaching at some of the top elite clubs teaching 8 days a week. Yup, I said it correctly.
I was also studying Chinese Medicine and Movement Therapy at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine where I I learned we don’t need to be ‘fit to move’. We need to learn to move well to age well and experience life without pain.
I have had the privilege of working with students who were 50 years my senior and I’ve learned that regardless of strength and agility, age does play a role in our movement. But changes as we age doesn’t have to hinder us.
I created Bamboo Bodies with your future in mind.
As we age, we need more diversity in our movement. I developed Bamboo Bodies from my Chinese Medicine studies as I saw the need for seasonal shifts in people’s movement. If we tuned our bodies into the seasonal Qi of the longer days of Summer and used that energy to boost our immune system and get outside, then we’d be ready for the shorter, darker days of Winter.
My students wanted to learn how to age pain-free and I wanted give people hope. Through Qigong movements and blended brain-based exercises my students got stronger, more confident as they returned to beloved activities & saw changes in their sleep, mood & energy levels! I just had to share this beyond the classroom!
No matter your age, we should all be training to see better, move better, think better and balance better. And regardless of what may come your way in the future, I wanted to create a platform for people to know that there’s still hope for your body. Bamboo Bodies is training you for the unexpected.
Age is just a number.
What you’ve been doing with those years is what counts!
Move today for tomorrow.
“My fitness goal? I want to be 90 years old and capable of standing while putting on my underwear. It sounds funny, but if you’ve stopped tying your shoe laces while standing… you’ve already set the path towards how you’re going to move as you age.” - Angi McClure
